Dias' Voyage of Discovery

Bartholomew Dias rounds the southern tip of Africa in search of new trade routes, traveling farther than any European ship had gone. Rather than continuing on across uncharted oceans toward the Orient, risking mutiny from his frightened crew, Dias turned back for home. Originally named the "Cape of Temptests" it is later named the "Cape of Good Hope."
