Linear Perspective

Sculptor and architect Filippo Brunelleschi (1377 - 1476) develops linear perspective, a mathematical system for representing three-dimensional space on a flat surface, in Florence. All of his paintings using perspective have been lost, but other artists quickly adopted the technique and made it a standard feature of Renaissance art. Architect and writer Leon Alberti (1404 - 1472) devised formal rules so all artists could create perspective in their own works.
