New Plants and Spices

Many new plants are introduced to Europe, some from the far east and others from the Americas. Corn from the Americas becomes popular, but other New World plants remain relatively limited, since the tomato and the potato were not adopted until later.

The mulberry tree (pictured) is introduced to Tuscany from China and spreads throughout southern Europe. The artichoke and cauliflower make their first appearance and the carrot and strawberry are domesticated.

Spices are in great demand in Europe, adding flavor to ordinary foods. Other luxury items from the East include silk, perfume, and pearls.
