Patronage Evolves

Patrons lend financial support to artists in order to demonstrate their wealth through commissioning of art works. Powerful patrons of the Renaissance include wealthy merchants (such as Lorenzo d'Medici, pictured here), influential guilds and church leaders. Painters and sculptors are now elevated to respected artists, and are no longer regarded as craftsmen.
