Glorify God: Madonna and Child: Artist Interview

Guiliano Bugiardini

Jester That's not what Giuliano Bugiardini looked like! That's a portrait of someone else entirely. There are no portraits of Bugiardini. Like most Renaissance artists, he probably wasn't rich or famous enough to have a portrait made and of course, cameras didn't exist 500 years ago.

So who is this? A rare portrait of an artist! This is Sodoma, and his friend Raphael put him into a painting about ancient Greece. Raphael also put Leonardo and Michelangelo, and himself into that painting-one of the few ways that we have an idea what those great artists looked like!

Madonna and Child is a fine theme, Monna Margherita. How about we add the infant St. John to the picture? It would enhance the symbolism, to show how the Madonna was a go-between for her divine Son and all mortals. I have painted more than a dozen works on this them. I can do it well, and I don't need to bone up on the subject either!
