Jester In fact, tempera paint was fast fading in popularity by now. Once artists figured out how to paint in oils, most of them switched without a glance backwards. Gold leaf fared poorly too, as artists decided that it was a greater feat to capture the appearance of gold with paint than to take the easy (but expensive) route and use real gold itself. And that way, the money goes to the artist instead of the gilder!

Tempera and gold leaf—an oldie but a goodie! I still remember how a glimpse of shimmering gold leaf made me weak at the knees when I was young. Youth today want to make things look "real" with oil paint, but there are more important things than reality! I am glad you understand that. Now, who shall create this masterpiece of yours?
