For over a thousand years, the only sculptures were reliefs, carved into a flat panel or wall of stone. Donatello's David was the first "in the
round" sculpture since antiquity. It was a smash success and soon other artists learned how to carve freestanding figures. Along with
linear perspective, it was an early step on the way to virtual reality!
