Jester Tempera, the oldest known paint, was the paint of choice for medieval artists. Tempera paint dries very fast, so artists had to apply it quickly with small brushstrokes. Once Jan van Eyck perfected the recipe for oil paint around 1410, Renaissance artists could paint much more realistic pictures. Oil paint takes weeks to dry, letting artists blend the paint and shade colors for a more realistic picture.
