Jester To make a living, Renaissance artists had to appeal to rich men and women who had the money to commission works. As the medieval mindset faded and patrons asked for new, non-religious subject matter, nudes became increasingly popular. Even Church cardinals commissioned paintings of female nudes to display in their bedrooms.
