van Eyck Invents Oil Paint

Painter Jan van Eyck (c.1390 - 1441), of Flanders is credited with the invention of oil paints - pigments mixed with oil instead of egg. Slower to dry, oil paints gave artists greater freedom of form and technique. Van Eyck's The Virgin and Child and Donor reveals the new realism possible with oil paints.
